His best known translation from García Márquez is Cien Años de Soledad or One Hundred Years of Solitude, which is generally credited of arousing the interest of English speakers in Latin American literature. Rabassa has translated a large number of prominent Latin American writers, including the great Colombian novelist and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez. Rabassa is the most outstanding contemporary Spanish-English translator who has made a great contribution in popularizing Latin American literature in the United States. I can illustrate how effective is Schleiermacher´s method by mentioning Gregory Rabassa as an example of the efficiency of the foreignization strategy. As Schleiermacher, I favor his view because I believe that a translator´s main task is to convey faithfully the meaning of the source text to the target text otherwise, the translator might end up missing part of the content and communicative intention of the source text. Schleiermacher clearly preferred the first method over the latter, which I am in complete agreement. The first translation method is nowadays known as foreignization and the latter is called domestication in today´s terminology. As we have discussed in class, Schleiermacher has proposed two different translation methods the translator either leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader to the writer or leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author to the reader.
